The President of the republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that ,Akonta Mining which is owned by The Ashanti regional chairman of his party is not into illegal mining properly known as galamesey.
Akonta Mining is owned by Bernard Antwi- Boasiako otherwise known as Chairman Wontumi. They company is said to be involved in the illegal exploration of mineral resources particularly in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve which located in the Western region.
But the president in clearing their air, said it is not true that the company is into such activities.
“I want to assure you all that Akonta Mining is not engaged in any form of illegal mining anywhere in Ghana as we speak,” he made this statement at the 28th National and 16th Biennial Congress of the National Union of Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priests Association in Koforidua.
However, the Land ministry recently declared the company as carrying illegal activities in that area and has since instructed the forestry commission to prevent the company from operating in the forest.
According to government Akonta Mining company is licensed to operate only in Samaboi but not in the Tano Nimiri forest reserve.
Meanwhile a lot of people has called for the prosecution of the company of which The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is leading the call. Their case is even being investigated by the Office of Special prosecutor.
Wontumi has said on his TV station, Wontumi TV that he is ready to assist investigation by the authority only if they will use legal means.

But The Media Coalition Against Galamsey says there is enough evidence to prosecute the company.
