Muntaka Mubarak, a former minority chief whip and member of parliament for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has counseled the incoming minority leadership to exercise patience and wait till after consultations have been held before assuming their positions.
Dr. Ato Forson pledged on Thursday to do everything in his ability to bring the caucus together before taking office on February 7 when Parliament returns from break.
Muntaka Mubarak, however, told the media on Thursday that the new leadership should exercise patience and permit discussions to take place between the minority caucus and the party executives.
Muntaka further disclosed that talks between Cassiel Ato Forson, the newly designated Minority Leader, and the outgoing Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, did not produce any results.
His statement goes against what Dr. Ato Forson claimed at a news conference on Thursday when he said that after being appointed by the party, he had productive conversations with his former leader.
Muntaka claims that during the meeting, the MP for Tamale South was “irritated” and listed a number of necessary actions, which he believes the MP for Ajumako-Enyam-Essiam disregarded.
“I can tell you that the meeting was not fruitful. He mentioned some measures that they had to take, but that was not done. I can tell you that he was irritated at the meeting,” Muntaka said during a press conference on Thursday.
Additionally, he cautioned the incoming leadership to ensure that the appropriate conversations between the NDC and the Minority caucus be held rather than rush into their new roles.
Over recent changes on their front bench in the legislative chamber, some NDC MPs have petitioned the party leadership.
Given the lack of input, the MPs think the reorganization is premature and does not bode well for the opposition party going into the upcoming elections.
Cletus Apul Avoka, the former majority leader and MP for Zebilla East, spoke to the media on January 26, 2023, at the request of the NDC lawmakers. He emphasized that only a conclusion reached after extensive consideration will be acceptable.
“The basis for our prayer is that the party suspend the reshuffling as indicated by the General Secretary until such a time that a holistic meeting of stakeholders with consultations before a decision is taken.”
