The report of Swift internet service provision by Starlink experienced by our neighboring Nigerians, really had an impact there is no doubt that many Ghanaians are happy to welcome Elon Musk’s SpaceX Satellite Internet; Starlink.
Some are also pleased to see Starlink becoming an upstart competitor to the already established internet service providers in the country. The day dream of Starlink providing faster internet speed at a lower cost was quite exciting until we woke up into reality.
Reality however sets in, and there is the need to rectify a number of notions with the introduction of the superfast Starlink in Ghana and coming to terms with it.
Notion 1: Starlink is an outright competitor for mobile networks in Ghana
Fact: The arrival of Starlink is an additional support to the ISP industry in Ghana. The company comes with 230 Mbps, and is by far better than what any mobile internet provider in Ghana presence to its users.
Notion 2: Starlink will be Accessible to all Ghanaians
Fact: Infact, with the coming in of Starlink to Ghana, we have seen that not everyone can afford it. Starlink did not come for the ordinary Ghanaians. Starlink’s installation rudiments and build of its hardware allows it to target affluent consumers and organizations only.
The Starlink’s hardware, which includes a Starlink dish and router, cost GHC 5,390 with an additional shipping cost of GHC 354. Meanwhile, the cost of the least monthly subscription in Ghana is GHC770.
Notion 3: Starlink has come to liberate Ghanaians from slow or terrible networks
Fact: Starlink internet faster speed is in no doubt recommendable but ii is not currently targeting everyday internet users/consumers. Starlink’s target consumers include institutions, companies, businesses, private bourgeoisie and tech individuals who want superfast internet speed for their operations and can also afford the installation costs in their residences and facilities, respectively.
You must still stick with your mobile internet providers or try MIFI if you happen to be a regular Ghanaian who just needs to access social media platforms and carry out regular internet activities til you can afford the specifications that Starlink comes with.
For a lot of people who are experiencing a bad network and wish to shun the mobile network that has been with us all these will, my question is, are you in to welcome a costly internet service with high speed? The choice is yours.
